Live Figure
Oil on Canvas, 36" x 48"
The most important part of figure painting is to capture accurate proportion. Color, texture, and contrast are all just the tools to help you get there. This painting developed through a focused three-hour long class with a live model. The dark background challenged me to apply paint generously in a slightly-more-impasto manner than my material-conservative instincts usually allow. Thankfully, this pushed boundary helped me present the wonderful texture that oil offers.

Mother and Son
Oil on Canvas, 16" x 20"
This piece was commissioned by a lovely, thoughtful father. I worked from a reference photo and used a grid for proportion. Portraits are especially challenging because as humans, we are so attuned to seeing other human faces that every tiny detail makes a huge difference.

Healthy Neurotransmitters
Oil on Canvas, 36" x 48"
Inspired by my father and his encounter with ALS, a fatal neurological disease, this painting shows a connection between brain neurons and muscles. I used bright, vibrant colors indicate health, suggesting a thriving ecosystem and system running properly.

Organized Thinking
Oil on Canvas, 30" x 40"
An honor toward attempts of precision, symmetry, and predictability. Throughout much of my work - although the subject matter is often organic or biological - there's a controlled, organized tightness. Why not just make this design on a computer program? By using freehand mediums, I challenge perfectionism. Using warm colors and cool colors, I utilize the qualities of oil with soft, gentle blending.

Discovery
Oil on Canvas, 36" x 48"
A youth immersed in discovery of herself, the earth, the universe, and the interconnectivity of all things. She's driven by her curiosity and sensitivity, a desire to learn and understand, and an eye for patterns and details. Every bit of new information feels both new and familiar - both exciting and stabilizing.
(A work still in development)

Blueberries
Oil on Canvas, 24" x 38"
This painting examines the gorgeous, powerful marriage between cadmium red and cobalt blue. #PowerCouple #RelationshipGoals

Perspective of a Good Boye
Oil on Canvas, 48" x 36"
Working through this surreal, moody painting gave me the unexpected gift of texture. The brush strokes featured on the dog came from a place of natural, intuitive flow while building basic form with the complete intention to paint over it later. Thankfully, I ran out of time before class critique and didn't get the chance to repaint it. During critique, those intentions were questioned and I learned to love the wild nature of my strokes. I'd like to learn to let loose and use this style more in future paintings.

Figure Practice
Oil on Paper, 6" x 4.5" each
A modern, minimalist take on cubism intended to fragment and abstract forms of the human figure.
